A typical do-it-yourself passport photo attempt: arm's-length selfie, face too large in frame, head tilted, slight smile, harsh flash shadow on the wall — would be rejected

01 — STAND BACK

Prop up your phone

Plain light wall, camera at eye level, a good step back. Arm's length distorts your face and fails.

02 — HOLD STILL

It shoots for you

Six live checks — centring, level, head size, eyes, mouth. When they all hold, it shoots itself.

03 — GET IT CHECKED

Graded before you pay

Graded against every document you picked, before you pay. A bad background is fixed; the rest means a retake.

WHAT WE WON'T DO

We never edit your face, hair or body.

New Zealand rejects photos altered by AI or filters, so the booth gets it right at capture. The cleanup step touches only the background behind you.

Not a driver licence photo — the licensing agent always takes that one in store. Anyone selling you one online is selling a file you can't use.

Questions people actually ask.

ANSWERS FROM THE OFFICIAL RULES

Which NZ ID photos can I take at home?

NZ passports, firearms licences (MyFirearms), security licences and certificates of approval (PSPLA), visa and NZeTA applications, and Kiwi Access 18+ cards all accept a photo you supply yourself, and each publishes an official specification. Driver licence photos are the exception — the licensing agent always takes that photo in store, so no online service can sell you one.

Can I take my own NZ passport photo at home?

Yes. New Zealand accepts a digital photo taken on your own camera as long as it meets the official specification — 3:4 colour JPEG, 900–4500 pixels wide, 1200–6000 pixels high, at least 250KB, less than six months old, plain light background, neutral expression. Prop your phone up and stand back rather than holding it at arm's length: a close, hand-held shot distorts your face and gets rejected.

What size is a New Zealand ID photo?

Printed photos are 35 × 45 mm for every NZ document — passport, firearms licence, security licence, visa and Kiwi Access card. Digital uploads vary by agency: passports take 900–4500 × 1200–6000 pixels, visas 900–2250 × 1200–3000 pixels, and each has its own file-size range. All are 3:4 portrait.

Can I use one photo for several documents?

Yes — that is what the bundle is for. Every NZ document covered here is the same 3:4 portrait shape; what differs is how tightly the head is framed and the file specification. Pick your documents before the shoot and one capture is cropped and sized to each official spec, for $4 per extra document.

Can I wear glasses in my NZ ID photo?

Tinted glasses, sunglasses and thick frames are not allowed for any NZ document. Clear prescription glasses may be worn if there is a visible gap between your eyes and the frames and there is no glare on the lenses — but taking them off is the safest option.

What happens if my photo is rejected?

Retakes are free and unlimited until your photo passes. If a government agency rejects a photo you bought here, email the rejection notice to [email protected] and your reshoot is free — as many times as it takes.

WHY THIS EXISTS

We paid $25 a head to stand against a wall.

Nobody showed us how the photos came out. What we'd paid for was somebody knowing the rules, and a printer — so I put the rules into the camera, and the photo in front of you before you pay for it.
